The Londoner
I had heard good things about this place so even though set fatback from the sidewalk with no curb appeal I had to check it out. The menu is diverse but customer favorites are just a few suggesting "do what you know best". The food is well prepared although not well presented nor improved by the high prices charged to dine in such a dark, unpleasant dining area. Maybe I will try takeout next time? It seems they have some loyalty among the neighbors here as a number of people popped in during our visit to pick up food to go. I guess it's necessary to find out what's best to go?
A-banda
Walking the streets of Marbelka and happened upon this small restaurant established in the shell of a former home. While the seating is a bit tight and the decoration is starting to show wear and tear, the staff is very attentive and the meals are convincingly Spanish. The paella was very good. Appreciated the olives on the table and the generous use of in the olive oil in the kitchen!
The Shack
My favorite neighborhood barbecue beer joint. A great barbecue burger. The fries could be improved, but the meals are large without the fries. Love the layer of cole slaw under the bun! The ribs could be meatier but perhaps not at these prices and in this market. A standby when you are hungry and want life simple.
Lola
One of my favorites. Tucked away in a renovated home on a quiet neighborhood road behind the new Soho mall the tasteful interior and pleasant outdoor patio provide an oasis of peace from the noise of the city. (Plus there are no TVs in the main dining area!) Highly recommend the seafood menu items. The juices (non-alcoholic) and cocktails from the bar are also noteworthy. The food is attractively presented, well-prepared and seasoned and portions are very generous.
Cafe Balear (Antiguo Jaleo)
After my first visit to this restaurant Ive returned however my reasons were not for the food but for the cave like wine "cellar" at the end and to the left of the entries large outdoor terrace. This intimate interior space without an overhead TV, but cool air and soft light and music provides a wonderful respite from the hectic city. The food is mediocre at best but a glass of wine and bread basket make this one of my favorite places to unwind in the company of a romantic partner or just a good friend.
Rock Burger (Sortis)
Like the name, tried the burgers. Tne quarter pounder with cheese and fries, one burger with guacomole. Moist burger, good fries. Unpretentious fast food cafeteria style no wait staff/servers but a step up from McDonalds and compete with flavor of Hard Rock cafes. Clean, quiet at noon at Sortis hotel location.
Athanasiou (Costa del Este)
Bakery heaven, a must for all bread, pastry and baklavs fiends. Also offer soups and sandwiches. Soup flavorful. Atmosphere wonderful with baked goods weghing down the front tables with delightful display. Worth going out of your way for this. Only drwback is staff (excluding bakers!), Cashier line slow, sandwich never srrived. Self serve bakery functions better. Place to buy your greek pine honey too,
Fenicia (Area Bancaria)
This restaurants menu trie to offer everything and it would be better if they focused on food fitting the Middle East theme (belly dancing offered some eves.) Water pipes make it a nice hang out for friends to gather, chat, Outdoor terrace nondescript. Service very attentive. Oddly, they have a good paella. Gyros lacked yogurt/ cuke sauce and dry. Very generous portions.
La Rana Dorada (El Cangrejo)
Perhaps its not fair to post a critique only having tried the beer, but since La Rana promotes itself as a microbrewery it seems this is its firsr priority. Our group tried all the brews and were disappointed. They were predominantly bitter - which is not necessarily irredeemable except when lacking other distinguishing features or depth. The brewery seems to primarily serve as a gathering spot for young visitors staying in the Casco,
Ginza Teppanyaki
The meal was prepared and served robotically and the food was unremarkable. A broth soup, much too thick (consistency of wall paper glue) had microscopic quantities of vegetables. The small salad was a pale chloryphyll leeched iceberg lettuce. Perhaps this restaurants interior is more agreeable during the evening but in the daytime the decoration and seating appeared outdated and worn.
