Snack Shack
I have been to many restaurants in Panama City and Casco Viejo with my wife and with groups of people during the nearly four years I have been here. My experience at Mahalo's was way above average and for value, service, ambiance and purely exceptional cuisine – the only word that comes to mind is “Exceptional,” - a truly delightful experience. To miss visiting Mahalo’s is to miss an “ultimate” dining experience in the true tradition and delight that is Casco Viejo in Panama.
Grapes
Very nice environment, good - not special, pasta dishes with salmon and pathetice - though typically Panamanian service - and the owner was in the restaurant and did nothing about it. Doormen did not help with doors. Waiter was summarily inattentive - never checked with us about water, wine or food. The real capper to the experience was a $30 TABLE FEE. What in the world is a table fee. I have never run into this in my 30+ years of living, working and traveling around the world. They finally took it off but we were ready to walk which I have never done. Be prepared - highly over-rated.
Aki Sushi
Overall a nice experience - popular venue with creative sushi - not traditional - and interesting presentations. Service was good and the preparation excellent. Cleanliness and hygiene - sorely lacking - and for that reason I would add caution. Chefs did not wear gloves and at least two dogs were in the place and at tables. Just be ware
Enotria
A most memorable evening out for my wife and I. An inviting atmosphere only added to the excellent food, wine and service. We enjoyed the grilled tuna and lasagna along with postres that were among the most decadent anywhere. The flavors, colors and presentation were extremely well done. Music and lighting were both pleasant and subdued allowing for a relaxing evening. The staff and service - excellent.
Alma Llanera Soul Kitchen
Simply spectacular. Cannot say more than reviews below. Best of the best in Panama City. Delicate and sensual presentation. Sublime tastes. A must visit !
Lomitos Steak House
Bottom line - we may try another time with just my wife and I - but there are many more better options in this price range meaning we may not get to it for several months - and we will see if they are still around. I would never go with more than 4 people. Reading reviews here gave us great hope for a good dining experience as we went with a group of people and the group menu seemed well thought out. We ate outdoors and the space is really delightful. We had a glass of wine - short pour but only $3.50. The we ordered and waited for the first course - and we waited - and waited - nearly 45 minutes. The ceviche was good, the presentation very poor - since all the ice melted in the ceviche dish it was obvious it had been sitting for some time (45 minutes). Then the entre - more waiting. Meat only - no accompaniments! Chicken was very thin, very small portions, terribly over-cooked, dry and tasteless other than the stream of sauce of some kind. Frys were old, cold and soggy - and served 10 - 15 minutes before the meat arrived. Steaks ordered rare or medio were returned at least twice and when the final one came it was an entirely different cut of meat - much thicker and finally cooked correctly. Desert again was a very long wait - at least 30 minutes. Brownies and icecream - melted ice cream as it had again been sitting a long time. Waitstaff assigned to our group really did do a better than average job but were not supported by the kitchen at all. And waitstaff standing around with nothing to do did nothing to assist when they could have helped. Now time for the bill - 20 min then go inside to find 5 people huddled around the cash register trying to figure out the billing.
D`Tapas
Want to feel welcome? Check this out. You will not be sorry. Gold mine. We stumbled onto this delightful, lovely eatery rather unexpectedly and without a great deal of anticipation. Boy were we wrong. This was a wonderful experience. Tapas as close to Madrid as I have had since leaving. Great selection, preparation, presentation and flavors. Flamenco music and performance was really great ! Service is really uniquely outstanding, friendly and above all happy. The manager/owner even assisted us in getting a taxi - AFTER we paid the bill and went outside.
Brio Brasserie
We ate here last night and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Our Offerta coupon afforded us a 3 course meal; soup or salad, corvina or beef medallions and desert. We sampled all. They were expertly prepared, delicious and the presentation was among the best we have seen in Panamá. Service too was very good. Waitstaff is properly, well trained and perfectly attentive. The timing between courses was a bit long but we enjoyed the time for conversation it gave us. The dining room is well decorated and all in all pretty cold in its arrangement. Some tables are in the middle of a large room with high ceilings and hard surfaces providing very little in the way of intimacy or warmth. Simple improvements could make the space much more inviting. The environment is very noisey. Food, presentation and service makes this a good place to visit - with the understanding of the environment.
Cafe Sante (Cerrado)
This has been a favorite neighborhood hangout just blocks from our flat. It is a great bar at night and a terrific gathering place to meet up and hope to meet up. As a restaurant it has rapidly gone downhill in the last few months. At lunch this week they were out of tuna and french fries. Our hamburger was returned several times to be cooked as ordered - we finally gave up when the 3rd was delivered cold. There is an arrogance about the place - Go to see and be seen, go to drink and go to hookup, but whatever you do don't go for the food.
Sukhi (Area Bancaria)
Just left this gem after lunch - Currie Verde con Pollo. I love Thai food and Sukhi does satisfy my love. The spices and flavoring are done in true Thai style and you can choose how spicy you like. They even know what "Thai" hot is - be prepared if you try it that way. Do not be fooled about the ambiance - it is also true to the tradition of the better eateries in Thailand. Don't miss this one when you have a hankering for authentic Thai - and don't miss the curries. Just be warned - you will want to go back often.
