Bellas
Excellent restaurant if you want meat! Went here to have a quick meal before watching the Copa Oro at the casino next door. I had a California Salad which was very flavorful even if it had a bit too much dressing. The Cheeseburger was perhaps the best I've had in the past year in Panama - made of USDA Prime beef from Texas, it had tremendous flavor and was not overcooked (I had it medium rare and it was perfect). The house spread on the cheeseburger was something special - I was told it even has some Jack Daniels in it to give it complexity. The French fries that accompanied the dish were freshly made and did not appear to come frozen from a bag (like a LOT of places in Panama, sadly). Staff was friendly and efficient. The location is directly on the Bay of Panama next to La Vespa Italian restaurant. Food at Bellas is more expensive that other steakhouses but the quality of the meat seems commensurate with the price.
La Bárbara
Excellent restaurant near the American Trade Hotel and the Merced cathedral. La Barbara x Aki Sushi is a mashup of a hair salon and a bar/sushi restaurant. I've yet to have my hair cut there, but can tell you that the sushi is among the best in Panama City with fresh fish and excellent presentation. I recently had the shrimp tempura as well as the pork gyoza appetizers. Loved the shrimp and the gyoza were tasty too. I also had a spicy tuna roll. Lots of tuna of a high quality. The cocktails were inventive - wasn't a fan of the Mai Tai, but the other drinks (made with Panamanian seco) were first-rate. Love this place. I'll be back for food and drink at La Barbara x Aki Sushi. Maybe I'll get my hair cut as well.
Hikaru (Marbella)
Really enjoyed my meal at the Hikaru in Marbella. Reminds me of the small restaurants I used to visit in Tokyo. It's a bit hard to find - down an alley from the main road - but well worth locating. I had the excellent gyozas followed by some 'gunkan' style sushi and a Gyudon bowl (rice and stewed beef). All of it was delicious. Service was very attentive. Will definitely return to try some of the other offerings.
Stizzoli (Pacific Center)
Perhaps the best pizza I have had in Panamá City. The pastas are excellent with a lot of flavor. There is a full bar. The menu has many options. I’ll be back here soon. Very good Italian food here 👍
Maagoo’s Fish Tacos
Best place for fish tacos in Panamá City. The smoked tuna, mahi mahi and jerk chicken tacos are delicious - lots of flavor. The smoked fish dip is a good appetizer. Lots of choices for beer and cocktails. Good service. Highest recommendation for Maagoo’s.
Madre Cucina Italiana (Casco Antiguo)
Some of the best pizza I’ve had in Panama. Good tiramisu too. Nice ambiance on Plaza Herrera in Casco Viejo. I’ll be back soon👍
Texas de Brazil
Had dinner on a Sunday night a few weeks after they opened. Beautiful interior. The salad bar was excellent. Caipirinhas were extremely small and full of ice; expensive for the price. Service was not good - especially compared to the locations of Texas de Brazil in the USA. Had to ask 4-5 times for cuts of meat and other items that were on the menu but not being served by the staff. Very irritating. Also although the restaurant was almost full, at times there would be only 1-2 servers with skewers of meat. Often had a plate empty of meat - never have had this happen at a rodizio before(!) Finally, I came alone and even though I told my waiter I was solo, the 2nd serving at my table was only taken away halfway through my meal. The grilled pineapple, garlic mashed potatoes, filete, and linguica were very good. Never got the salmon I requested. 10% propina automatically added to the bill (see above about poor service). Never was approached by a manager to see what I thought of my meal. No interest in feedback I guess. This churrascuria would last 1 month in the cities of the USA, less in Brazil. Hope the restaurant can step up its game, hate to see a beautiful restaurant in PTY not make it. I’ll give this restaurant one more chance in a month or two (it hasn’t been opened too long). Perhaps they can work out the problems.
Chalet Suizo
Chalet Suizo has been one of my favorite restaurants in Panama City - the European food is very good (and unusual in Panama), service is efficient and the interior (until recently) comfortable. It was like taking a trip to Switzerland. This visit to Chalet Suizo was different. The old location which housed the restaurant in its own charming location, has been turned into a Chinese restaurant. Chalet Suizo has suffered the ignominy of now be located in a strip center as part of a wine bar (loud). You walk through the front door to see a hodge lodge of tables - to your right you enter Chalet Suizo, almost an afterthought tucked away in a corner with a small dining room and a couple of tables leading to the kitchen. The menu is the same as the old location but the charm is lost. And this affects the food in my opinion. I hope whoever now owns the Chalet Suizo might reconsider how the wine bar/Chalet Suizo is set up. I’d hate to see this fine restaurant close but it is like a ‘death watch’ for a close friend.
Cava 15
Nice bar on the lobby floors of the JW Marriott (former Trump Hotel). Jack makes the best martini I’ve had in Panama. Limited food menu - the ‘club’ sandwich I tried was dry served panini style and almost inedible. Hope that they up their game re food offerings.
Ruth`s Chris Steakhouse
Good beef. Service is abysmal - nothing I ordered came out correctly. Prices are high - 3 BBQ shrimp for $21 (appetizer). Bar staff need better training; they're not sure how to make the drinks even on the Ruth's drink list. The US operations guys need to help get this location up to the standards of the rest of the Ruth's chain.
