Diablicos
This is my second visit to Diablicos and both times it's been a winner! My first visit was right after it opened--we stumbled on it while when we were going to an event at the National Theatre--and my 2 friends and I thought the food, service and decor were great. The second time I took out-of-town visitors there for lunch--the aranitas were excellent, the sancocho delicious, the whole fish got picked to the last morsel, and the plantain stuffed with seafood plate was licked clean. Service was attentive and the bill arrived promptly. What more can you ask? Another Casco winner!
Da Noi
Good thick crust pizza and a decent chicken Caesar salad. Reasonable prices and competent and attentive servers.
Diablicos
Brand-new, fun interior, tipico Pamanamian food. We weren't certain we'd like the cuisine but all 3 of us were pleased with our selections. My ropa vieja was excellent--tasty without being tough or chewy--and it was served with plantains and arroz con guandu (one of my favorites). Located right behind Teatro Nacional and next to the Tourist Police office, it's impossible to miss, especially since there's a life-sized red devil out front. The owner, who speaks a tiny bit of English, told us that there will be tipico dancing at 9 pm on Fri & Sat nights. This place would be a great alternative to the usual tipico dance spots, since you can order dinner off the menu and the food is very good. Our only complaint--not a single vegetable or salad.
Sukhi (Area Bancaria)
Finally, real Thai in Panama! The summer rolls were excellent--altho I'm used to them being made with shrimp, these vegetarian rolls were flavorful and crunchy and the hoisin-type sauce (plus a little hot sauce for me) set them off well. The tom yum goong (classic hot & sour soup with shrimp) was quite spicy and tasty, tho a bit too salty and the langostinos were a bit too big for soup--shrimp would have been better. Altho cherry tomatoes really didn't belong in tom yum goong, all-in-all, it was quite good. My green Thai chicken curry (my favorite) didn't disappoint--I ate every bite of it and the jasmine rice. I'm used to the dish being made with Chinese eggplant but this dish used green beans, which worked well, too. My companion's Thai basil stir fry looked like hamburger but was declared delicious and he, too, ate every bite. We arrived in time for Happy Hour and had 2-for-1 vodka collins which, to my surprise, went very well with the food. (I normally would order beer with Thai food.) Altho the decor is a bit "fast food"--orange plastic chairs and high tables--the ambiance is pleasant and the service was quite good. The owners came over to our table and asked how we liked our food and for suggestions. They said they're still trying to source more Thai ingredients--like the correct kind of green papaya for green papaya salad--not an easy task in Panama! Altho the restaurant has only been open a week or two,I'm thrilled at the prospect of authentic Thai here in Panama!
Limoncillo
Limoncillo Pony Club is a winner. Last night my companion and I started the evening with martinis--a classic gin with two olives for me and a vodka on the rocks for my friend. Excellent. The menu has changed somewhat from the last time I was here in Nov. My friend and I were talking for quite a while after we were seated and our waiter, tactfully, did not interrupt us until we closed our menus and finally were ready to order. I chose the tortelli (an agnoli-like filled pasta) cangrejo, langosta & zuchinni--absolutely fabulous--and an ensalada mixta, which had fresh, crisp field greens, tomatoes, grated carrot, cucumber and a sprinkling of cheese, topped with a light vinaigrette dressing. I thought I was hungry but the portions were so generous that both ended up "para llevar". My companion ordered the Langostinos Salteados with grilled mixed vegetables. Altho I didn't try the vegetables, the prawns were perfectly cooked and succulent. He did not need a doggy bag! We saved room for a dessert--shared, of course. Intrigued with the name, we chose the "Media Noche" which was a substantial serving of chocolate/nut cake with a side of vanilla ice cream. Since I don't bake, I don't know exactly howto describe the cake, which was more crumbly and dry than a traditional cake. The combination was perfect and, needless to say, not a crumb was left.
